As we end another year time I thought it was time to look back over the past 12 months and with us being so busy I must admit I had forgotten just how much has gone on. Big thanks to everyone at TKO for helping to make it another very successful year
The year started with us moving our Maidstone location into bigger and better premises in Cuxton Road, Parkwood. It was a great success and we welcomed many new members to TKO.
We flew with members of the TKO team to Bordeaux in France where we took part in the European Open Junior Championships. A great success with George Hennon and Tyler Oxford taking first place in their divisions.
February 18th saw us off to Ireland where Kelly Copeland and Patric Halforty both scored wins over Valerie Hamilton and Abdulla Smew respectively whilst Garthy Shove managed a draw in his challenge for the IKF European title.
A week later we had the first KOMBAT ZONE event of the year where the Hennon brothers George and Harry both took wins and Frank Miall scored a win in a nice White Collar Boxing bout. A very good event which featured the thrilling bout between Steve Cook and Shawn Burton.
In one of the busiest weekends of the year for us we held the first Battle of Kent event at Lordswood Leisure centre and then straight into our cars we drove down to Bournemouth where Patric Halforty took another win and Ross Terry scored a win in a boxing bout on a great show promoted by the Bulldog Gym
The last weekend of March saw us in Norwich for the KUMITE promoted by Richard Vince and the team at MA Action and it was a clean sweep for us. Patric Halforty beat Callum Meeks, Kay Sumner defeated Kerrie O’Hanlon from Ireland and George Hennon won the special 4 man event held between 4 of the best young fighters in the country. One of the best events we attended all year, brilliant night made even better as we had a bus load of supporters there cheering them on.
Another busy weekend as we held our first interclub event of the year at the TKO academy open only to novice competitors but it still attracted over 60 fighters. Next day our more experienced fighters went to Bury St Edmunds and scored 4 wins out of 6. A successful trip for our coaches on the day Kelly Copeland and George Hennon
21st April saw our second event which was exclusively for White Collar Boxing. A great bill full of guys boxing for the very first time with a couple of more experienced fighters as well including a hard battle between Ross Terry and Rafe Daniels from Star KB
And finally still in April we hosted a seminar with Vinny Shoreman who gave us a great lightfinder seminar which was very informative and appreciated by all those who attended.
Another KOMBAT ZONE event and another TKO Champion as Kelly Copeland took the IKF British Lightweight title with a great win over Jodie Whittaker. There was also debut full contact wins for Harry Hennon, Tom Everard and Bradley Fothergill.
4 fighters, 4 wins at the light contact event promoted by Steve Cook in Aylesbury. The team comprised of Harry Hennon, Jenson Rowley, Chayden carpenter and Bradley Wray.
1st July saw the biggest Battle of Kent event ever! 93 fights, a very full day and just a pleasure to be involved in
Our second trip of the year to Ireland. Harry Hennon took a win in his first fight under low kick rules, Bradley Fothergill took another win and Kay Sumner narrowly lost out in what can only be described as the most thrilling contest of the year when she went toe to toe with Yvonne McNevin. I was also honoured to be awarded my 6th Dan in the ring by Mr Peter Foley, a nice moment for me that was very much appreciated.
First weekend and off to Suffolk again for another great event promoted by Pete Dunnett. Another clean sweep with wins for Shannon Beaney, Jenson Rowley and Chayden Carpenter
Second weekend and another KOMBAT ZONE. Kelly Copeland defended her British title and we took another belt when Patric Halforty overpowered Murray Dadswell to take the IKF British Cruiserweight title. The team on the night was completed by Harry Hennon, Matt Pragnell, Jenson Rowley, Bradley Fothergill and there was a return to the ring for Neil Ayton who took a win in a White Collar Boxing bout
September also saw our second seminar of the year this one being conducted by our good friend Darren Chan who gave a great introduction to those in attendance into Kyokushin Knockdown Karate. A great day..with loads of aching limbs the next day!
To complete an incredibly busy month on the last weekend we were just up the road in Sittingbourne where Bradley Fothergill and Jenson Rowley became 2012 Ringmaster Champions
First weekend and preparation for the forthcoming contests was well underway so we held a big sparring session at the Medway Academy and were joined by the teams from Star Kickboxing and Combat Kickboxing, a great day. Thanks go to Paul Haworth and Pete Dunnet the coaches for those two clubs, both of whom we work with throughout the year.
16th October and the 3rd Battle of Kent event of the year and another success. Its position as the top event of its kind in the area is now pretty much secure.
October saw the full contact debut of Tyler Oxford who took a win over a very good fighter Connor Shea at a great event held in Aylesbury by Steve Cook
Another seminar and real superstar at the TKO gym as we hosted Herol ‘Bomber’ Graham who gave a great Boxing seminar to a packed class. Great day and just a very nice guy.
Next week saw our 2012 Black belt Gradings and successful in obtaining their 1st Dan Black belts were Bradley Fothergill, Harry Hennon, Patric Halforty and Tyler Oxford. Frank Miall a long time loyal member of TKO was successful in obtaining his 2nd Dan
Then we had our presentation night the next weekend and students of the year awards were awarded to many on the night. Fighter of the year went to Kelly Copeland, well deserved recognition for her fantastic year
And then on the 25th the final KOMBAT ZONE event of the year and yet ANOTHER TKO champion as Bradley Fothergill took the IKF English Junior title. Bradley’s had just a great year and will go on to achieve so much more. There were also wins in Kickboxing for Matt Pragnell and George Hennon whilst brother Harry had to be content with a draw. In White Collar Boxing we had wins for Andy Beale, Michael Wagstaff and Richard Atkins
Our last trip of the year this time to Scotland and another 100% win record. Harry Hennon scored a stoppage win in the first round whist Kelly Copeland took a second title as she won the WKA Commonwealth title over Ashley Brace from Wales. A great night’s work on a great event promoted by the Allan Family on which I saw the best fight I have seen for years in a kickboxing ring with a great battle between Michael Robbie Johnson and Sam Allan, brilliant fight!
And finally our last event of the year was the latest TKO Interclub event where once again we gave an opportunity for the novice to compete, with no one who had 3 fights or more on their record being allowed to take part. A very enjoyable day.
As I started to write this I really never thought there was just so much that has happened this year. With 4 big events set to take place in the first 3 months of 2013 alone it looks like next year is set to be even bigger. I look forward to working with ALL TKO members whether aspiring Champion or whether you’re just starting out and looking to improve your health, fitness and well being.
See you at the TKO Academy!
